THE COOK

I grew up in a kitchen.  I grew up in my Nan's kitchen to be exact, next to the Aga.  I didn't live with my Nan, well not full time but a lot of the time.  Nan lived on a farm so that was the place to be, the place I love, the place I had so many adventures and the place I watched my Nan and my Mum cook.

My Mum always cooked.  She worked in kitchens and sold cakes at the market.  My Mum would make chocolate eclairs and after the chocolate had dripped off them onto the work surface I would stand on my high chair with a knife chipping away at the chocolate and devouring it happily covered from top to bottom in the stuff!

I lived in a cafe for 10 years- well above the cafe my Mum owned and ran.  My Mum was so good at cooking people would queue at the weekend to come to the cafe.  They would cue out of the door and along the outside wall to get in!  This was bad for me and my brother who had no kitchen other than the cafe and we had 2 options for our dinner:
1) Go to the cafe down the road that was not as good as Mum's cafe so much quieter and order lunch there
2) Get one of the waitress's to write an order for a table and wait for it to come out of the kitchen and then take it upstairs- Mum would be none the wiser and this was our preferred option!

I have worked in a few kitchens and my favourite was the Thai restaurant.  I loved that kitchen.  It was tiny, hot, chaotic and the Thai girls just shouted swear words in Thai but I loved it.  After a long time getting to trust me they allowed me into the inner circle of the Thai kitchen and taught me how to make the food and best still let me eat the things they cooked for themselves, not the menu stuff, the chickens feet and squids heads in a chili sauce so hot I nearly passed out!

My Mum now cooks in her B & B in North Yorkshire in the UK and has won many awards for her food and hospitality- well deserved too!

I simply cook for me, my family and my friends.  I have too many cook books according to my husband and I read them cover to cover.

Food is my life, my pleasure and my addiction.
